“Moving at-risk people into community housing without proper consultation and support systems in place is reckless and irresponsible. This decision not only endangers these individuals but also places an undue burden on the surrounding community” - Teresa Wat, Conservative Party of British Columbia Candidate for Richmond-Bridgeport
August 7, Richmond, BC: Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond North Centre and Conservative Party of British Columbia Candidate for Richmond-Bridgeport, strongly condemns the NDP government for its lack of proper consultation with the community in its support of the new supportive housing at Cambie and Sexsmith, citing serious concerns from residents about community safety and the wellbeing of residents.
Criticism of Cambie Gardens Supported Housing
Teresa Wat criticized the BCNDP government’s decision to support and promote the Cambie and Sexsmith development, a project that involves moving at-risk individuals into community-based supportive housing without undergoing a comprehensive consultation with residents and businesses in the neighbourhood. Wat expressed significant concerns about the impact this will have on the local community, particularly regarding safety and adequate care for these individuals.
“The NDP government has once again shown its disregard for the safety and wellbeing of our communities,” said Teresa Wat. “Moving at-risk people into community housing without proper consultation and support systems in place is reckless and irresponsible. This project proposes 90 individual studio apartments right in the middle of thriving small businesses and a growing community of young families. This decision not only endangers the at-risk individuals but also places an undue burden on the surrounding community.”
Community Concerns and Lack of Consultation
Wat highlighted the lack of community consultation and transparency in the decision-making process for Cambie and Sexsmith. Local residents have raised numerous concerns about the integration of such a facility in their neighbourhood, particularly potential safety risks. These concerns have led to significant opposition from the community.
Commitment to Responsible Housing Policies
The Conservative Party of British Columbia, under the leadership of John Rustad, is committed to ensuring that housing policies are both responsible and beneficial for all community members. This includes thorough community consultation, transparent decision-making processes, and the provision of adequate support services for vulnerable populations.
Teresa Wat’s Vision for Richmond-Bridgeport
As the Conservative Party candidate for Richmond-Bridgeport, Teresa Wat pledges to advocate for policies that prioritize community safety, responsible development, and the welfare of all residents. “We need housing solutions that are thoughtfully planned and executed, with the input and support of the community. Advancing a project with next to no consultation sets the project up for failure for both at-risk residents and the surrounding community. The Conservative Party will work tirelessly to ensure that every development project meets these standards,” Wat emphasized.
