Statement from Conservative Labour Critic Kiel Giddens on WorkSafeBC crane accident report
“It’s been four years since the tragic death of five workers at the crane collapse disaster in Kelowna, and there still hasn’t been a report released with crane safety recommendations for government and industry. The NDP government and Labour Minister Jennifer Whiteside need to direct WorkSafeBC to make that work a priority.”

Victoria, BC – The following statement is issued from Prince George-Mackenzie MLA and Labour Critic Kiel Giddens on the WorkSafeBC investigation of the 2024 crane accident at the Oakridge Park construction site in Vancouver. This incident resulted in the tragic death of 41-year old Yuridia Flores.
“Every worker deserves to go to work knowing that they will make it home to their loved ones at the end of each day on the job. Clearly, to make this a reality, more needs to be done on crane safety in B.C. to protect workers.”
“I’ve spoken with both construction associations and labour groups this week and can say with 100% certainty that this is top of mind for industry.”

“Safety is not a partisan issue. Together, we need to ensure that existing crane safety rules are being followed, that proper training and certification is in place, and that clear site responsibilities are understood between prime contractors and subcontractors.”
