Statement on the Passing of Maggie Ip

"Vancouver has lost one of its most compassionate and dedicated leaders. Maggie Ip embodied the best of public service, always working to build a more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming city." - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia

October 10th Vancouver, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, expressed his deepest condolences today following the passing of Maggie Ip, a trailblazing community leader and advocate for immigrant communities in Vancouver.

Maggie Ip, originally from Shanghai, arrived in Canada with a passion for education and community service, earning a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Ottawa. It was through her early volunteer work with the YWCA in Vancouver’s Strathcona and Chinatown neighborhoods that she recognized the unique challenges faced by new immigrants. This realization led her to establish S.U.C.C.E.S.S., now Canada’s largest settlement service agency, which has helped thousands of newcomers adjust to life in Canada.

“Maggie Ip was a true visionary and a compassionate leader,” Rustad said. “Her dedication to improving the lives of immigrants through S.U.C.C.E.S.S. transformed the lives of thousands of people, creating opportunities for newcomers to thrive in their new home.”

Her legacy of service extended into her time as a Vancouver City Councillor from 1993 to 1996, where she championed inclusivity and community-building efforts. “Maggie’s leadership on City Council was an inspiration. She was compassionate, thoughtful, and deeply committed to creating a better Vancouver. Her work exemplified what true leadership should be,” Rustad added.

Maggie Ip’s unwavering commitment to the betterment of Vancouver and her tireless advocacy for immigrant communities will continue to inspire generations. “Vancouver is a better place because of Maggie Ip, and her legacy will guide us forward for many years to come,” Rustad concluded.
