Conservatives Slam Minister Kahlon’s Dismissive Approach to Short-Term Rental Chaos
Victoria, BC –Conservative Housing Critic Linda Hepner, MLA for Surrey-Serpentine River, is calling out Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon for his refusal to acknowledge widespread concerns from the BC Real Estate Association (BCREA) and others regarding the province’s botched rollout of short-term rental (STR) regulations and this week’s release of an “MLA Validation Kit” that adds confusion rather than clarity.
“Minister Kahlon was given an opportunity to course-correct when the BCREA raised reasonable concerns,” said MLA Hepner. “Instead, he dismissed their request out of hand. Now, thousands of hosts are facing removal from platforms like Airbnb, not because they’re flouting the rules—but because the government’s system is full of technical traps.”
The so-called “validation kit” shared with MLAs ahead of the June 2 platform enforcement deadline outlines a cumbersome and unforgiving process where even a minor typo in a postal code or omission of a unit number can lead to immediate de-listing. The burden is placed entirely on hosts—even those in full compliance—without meaningful government support or recourse.
“What we’re seeing is a blame-the-host mentality,” added MLA Hepner. “If your listing disappears, the government’s answer is: you did something wrong. No appeal, no acknowledgement of system error, just: too bad, you’re off the list.”
This heavy-handed approach is hitting rural tourism, film industry workers, and temporary medical staff the hardest—precisely the people BC’s economy relies on. Despite pleas from business and tourism stakeholders for common-sense exemptions and flexibility, Minister Kahlon continues to claim that “the system is working.”
“The only thing working is this government’s spin machine,” said MLA Hepner. “Meanwhile, the people who provide seasonal accommodations in places like the Okanagan or the Island are being kicked offline by bureaucratic red tape.”
Conservative MLAs are calling for an immediate suspension of the new short-term rental regulations over the summer months to give providers and government time to align on implementation. In addition, we are calling for a full review of the program to address the confusion, technical failures, and unfair penalties that have already emerged. British Columbians deserve a system that works with them — not against them.
