“This government is more focused on pandering to criminals than protecting our communities. We need a complete overhaul of this failed system, and it starts with replacing the BCNDP” - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia
August 8, Vernon, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, and Elenore Sturko, MLA for Surrey South and Conservative Party Candidate in Surrey-Cloverdale, condemn the Eby BCNDP government for its lenient crime policies that put law-abiding citizens at risk.
Soft-on-Crime Policies Exposed
A recent article revealed the shocking news that Shaun Wiebe, a Vernon pharmacist sentenced in 2023 for killing his partner by repeatedly smashing her head into the floor, has been granted parole just one year into his sentence. Wiebe’s early release, despite his violent history and the Parole Board’s assessment of his high risk for intimate partner violence, underscores the dangerous leniency of the current administration’s “hug-a-thug” approach to crime.
John Rustad on Public Safety
“The Eby BCNDP government’s disgraceful ‘hug-a-thug’ policies are putting every British Columbian in danger,” said John Rustad. “Letting violent offenders like Shaun Wiebe out on parole after serving a mere fraction of their sentence is not just reckless, it’s a blatant betrayal of public trust. This government is more focused on pandering to criminals than protecting our communities. We need a complete overhaul of this failed system, and it starts with replacing the BCNDP.”
Elenore Sturko on Accountability
Elenore Sturko echoed Rustad’s sentiments, emphasizing the dire need for accountability and tougher sentencing laws. “The BCNDP’s soft-on-crime stance is a slap in the face to victims and their families. Their failure to enforce meaningful consequences for violent crimes is appalling. British Columbians deserve leaders who will stand up for justice and public safety, not ones who coddle criminals. Under a Conservative government, we will ensure that justice is served and that violent offenders stay behind bars where they belong.”
Commitment to Law and Order
The Conservative Party of British Columbia pledges to restore law and order through several key initiatives including:
- Stricter Sentencing Laws: Implement tougher penalties for violent crimes to ensure offenders serve their full sentences.
- Increased Support for Law Enforcement: Provide more resources and training to police forces to effectively combat crime.
- Combating Drug Use and Trafficking: Crack down on drug use and trafficking by increasing enforcement against drug dealers, implementing stricter penalties, and supporting rehabilitation programs that focus on getting individuals off drugs and keeping communities safe.
- Victim Protection: Enhance measures to protect victims of crime and support their recovery.
John Rustad and Elenore Sturko call on British Columbians to support the Conservative Party’s vision for a safer province. “Together, we can build a justice system that prioritizes the safety of our communities and ensures that criminals face the consequences of their actions,” said Rustad.
