Conservatives Stand with Richmond Residents Against Failed NDP Drug Policies

“The NDP push policies that increase crime, fuel addiction, and put British Columbians at risk. Conservatives are committed to real solutions like mandatory, compassionate intervention and tough-on-crime policies to restore order.”

RICHMOND, BC: The Conservative Party of BC held a press conference at Richmond City Hall today with local community group Keep Richmond Safe to discuss the cancellation of the Cambie-Sexsmith supportive housing project and to demand solutions to the drug and public safety crisis in Richmond and across the province.

Conservative Party of BC Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition John Rustad was joined by local MLAs Teresa Wat, Hon Chan, and Steve Kooner. MLA Rustad emphasised the dangers of NDP drug policies, including decriminalisation and “safe supply.” He warned that the NDP could force similar so-called supportive housing projects on other communities across BC.

“Richmond stood up and won, but this fight is far from over,” said Rustad. “The NDP push policies that increase crime, fuel addiction, and put British Columbians at risk. Conservatives are committed to real solutions like mandatory, compassionate intervention for addicts and tough-on-crime policies to restore order on our streets.”

MLA Teresa Wat reaffirmed the concerns of Richmond residents, stating, “The NDP pushed this project from day one, never giving residents a chance to voice their concerns and objections. It took the community to say no, and the city to listen, while the Premier and his tone-deaf NDP continued to try and get their way.”

Shadow Attorney General Steve Kooner vowed to continue the fight for safer communities across the province: “The Conservative Party of BC will not stand by while the provincial government enables crime and open drug use. The NDP prioritise criminals over communities. We will continue to fight for stronger policing, tougher sentencing, and real recovery solutions.”

MLA Hon Chan added, “This project wasn’t supportive housing, it was a drug den disguised as policy. Richmond residents have made it clear they want safety, not more crime, drugs, and disorder.”

The press conference preceded the Keep Richmond Safe Rally for Action on Drugs.
