BC’s Job Numbers Reveal a Troubling Trend: More Bureaucrats, Fewer Private Sector Jobs

KELOWNA, BC: Gavin Dew, MLA for Kelowna - Mission and Conservative Opposition critic for Jobs, Economic Development, and Immigration, released the following statement on the latest labour force data from Statistics Canada:

"The latest labour force data exposes the NDP government’s failure to foster real economic growth. While BC added 23,000 jobs in January, unemployment still rose to 6.0%, proving that job creation is not keeping pace with population growth. Worse, the province continues to rely on taxpayer-funded government jobs instead of supporting the private sector. Over the past two years, the public sector has grown nine times faster than private industry in BC—an unsustainable trend that signals economic weakness, not strength."

“We saw some tepid job growth in January, but a deeper dig is concerning. Job growth isn’t keeping up with population growth, wages aren’t keeping up with inflation, and public sector jobs keep outpacing the private sector that pays for them. The NDP is expanding government while private businesses struggle. This isn’t a plan for prosperity—it’s a recipe for higher taxes and economic stagnation. British Columbians deserve better.”
