The Conservative Party of British Columbia has nominated Karin Litzcke, a 30-year resident of Strathcona and long-time education advocate as their candidate for the Vancouver Mount Pleasant by-election.
Karin has advocated for a greater focus on evidence-based teaching, and less teaching of divisive social-values, in British Columbia’s public schools. As a voice in the legislature, she aims to improve public schooling, to improve access to justice, and to stop the promotion of ideology throughout government institutions – like our school system.
Karin qualified as a dietitian in 1981 and worked at the Vancouver cancer clinic through the 1980s. She completed an MBA at the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario before returning to Vancouver and starting her family.
As an active mom, Karin became an involved parent at her children’s inner-city school in Vancouver, serving on several school board committees as well as on her school’s PAC.
In 2001, Karin wrote a critical report about the effect of teachers’ unions on the quality of teaching in public schools. In 2012 she launched a court action to have the legal rights of parents recognized in a litigation between the teachers’ union and the government.
"Over the years, Karin has spoken with hundreds of parents about BC’s public school system. She has been advocating for our schools to return to common sense teaching and get away from promoting ideologies. She’s also a great advocate for Parents’ Choice, which is something only the Conservative Party of British Columbia is fighting for,” says MLA John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia.
Karin’s other volunteer commitments have included helping to build women’s competitive cycling in Canada, local service on the East End Food Co-op’s board of directors, Strathcona Residents’ Association member and secretary, and participating in a family-run seniors’ home.
