John Rustad Unveils Plan to Bring Local Power Generation to Northwest BC, Lower Energy Costs for Residents
“Our approach will make energy more affordable for families and businesses in the Northwest. We will reduce the dependency on long and expensive power lines that only add to the costs, and create jobs in local power generation.” - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia
September 26th, Prince George, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, today announced a bold plan to address the energy crisis in the Northwest by focusing on local power generation. With communities like Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, and Prince Rupert facing rising energy costs, Rustad emphasized that local solutions are key to making power affordable and reliable for the region.
“The solution is to increase local power generation in the Northwest to bring down costs and increase energy security,” said Rustad. “It’s not building costly power lines from the northeast that would raise costs for BC hydro customers across the province”.
The Conservative Party’s plan will focus on harnessing local resources to generate power more efficiently. This includes:
- Utilizing Wood Waste: Sustainable wood waste will be used to generate power locally, supporting the region’s forestry industry while creating a reliable source of energy.
- Leveraging Natural Gas: Natural gas will be tapped to provide a stable and cost-effective energy supply, ensuring power reliability for Northwest BC communities.
By generating power locally with natural gas, Rustad explained that energy costs for residents in Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rubert, and other Northwest communities would be dramatically reduced as a result of a decrease in natural gas delivery charges.
“Ratepayers do not need to spend more on another boondoggle project by David Eby’s NDP in the form of unneeded power lines from the North East. Instead we’ll generate the power locally and save British Columbians millions in energy costs”.
Rustad underscored the Conservative Party’s commitment to bringing economic prosperity and energy security to the region, ensuring that residents in the Northwest are no longer left behind by the NDP’s costly, inefficient policies.
“The Conservative Party of British Columbia believes in local solutions for local communities,” Rustad concluded. “We will produce the power locally, make it cheaper, and ensure that the people of the Northwest get the energy security they deserve while reducing natural gas delivery charges for everyone.”
