“The extremist and hateful rhetoric of Assim Al-Hakeem has no place here. His views are antithetical to the values that British Columbians hold dear. Al-Hakeem’s history of promoting anti-Semitism, misogyny, and homophobia makes him a dangerous figure who should not be welcomed in our communities.” - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia
August 27, Vancouver, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, is strongly condemning the scheduled appearance of Assim Al-Hakeem, a Saudi-based cleric known for his extremist and hateful views, who is set to speak in Vancouver today. Rustad is calling on Premier David Eby and the BC NDP to immediately denounce Al-Hakeem’s presence in the province.
“British Columbia is a place of diversity, tolerance, and respect. The extremist and hateful rhetoric of Assim Al-Hakeem has no place here,” said Rustad. “His views are antithetical to the values that British Columbians hold dear. Al-Hakeem’s history of promoting anti-Semitism, misogyny, and homophobia makes him a dangerous figure who should not be welcomed in our communities.”
Al-Hakeem, who has a documented history of making deeply troubling statements, has described Jews as the “enemies of Islam” and claimed that their hatred is “in their DNA.” He has also called for the conquest and subjugation of non-Muslims, and has promoted the belief that Muslims should not obey the laws of countries like Canada, which he refers to as “Kafir” nations.
“It is shocking that someone with such vile views is allowed to conduct his hate tour of Canada freely — he should be deported,” Rustad continued. “The BC NDP and Premier David Eby must unequivocally condemn this visit and make it clear that such hate-filled ideologies are not welcome in British Columbia. Failure to do so sends a dangerous message that this kind of extremism can find a home here.”
Rustad concluded, “We cannot be complacent in the face of hate. British Columbians deserve leaders who will stand up and protect the values of inclusivity and respect that define our province. It is time for Premier Eby to show real leadership and take a stand against this ideology of hatred.”
