Demand Action to Prevent Disaster Near Chemical Plant in North Vancouver - Seymour
“A patch of North Shore waterfront spotlighted as one of the most hazard-prone pieces of land in Metro Vancouver is facing new scrutiny as the prospect of disaster collides with plans to expand housing and extend the life of a major chemical plant.” North Shore News, May 25, 2024
The land east and north of the Second Narrows Bridge, including the area near the Real Canadian Superstore on Main Street, has been highlighted as one of the most hazard-prone areas in Metro Vancouver. Risks include the potential failure of the Seymour Dam, which could lead to flooding, increased impacts from earthquakes due to the sediment base in this area, and liquefaction—a phenomenon where water-logged ground starts to behave like a liquid, causing foundations to crack, triggering landslides, and even swallowing buildings and cars.
No details of findings or an updated flood mitigation project have been revealed in more than a year since the provincial government announced the completion of a flood risk assessment project in April 2023, having spent $125,000 on the study.
The BC NDP government is COMPLETELY ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL, with Susie Chant as a willing passenger. They love to talk big about climate change, but when it comes to taking real action, they're nowhere to be found.
Here are the facts:
- This is a REAL and potentially disastrous issue for loss of lives and property
- The community and local governments are ill prepared to handle it
- A chemical plant, a new town center site, a grocery store and 10000 new housing units could be at risk
