September 11, Parksville, BC: Elenore Sturko, MLA for Surrey South and Conservative Party of British Columbia candidate for Surrey-Cloverdale, criticized Premier David Eby and the BC NDP for their mishandling of the province’s drug crisis, which has left families devastated and overwhelmed support services. A recent report highlights the surge in demand at Lumara, a grief camp for families who have lost loved ones to drug overdoses, revealing a staggering increase in cases related to the drug crisis.

“Four years ago, one in every 18 or 19 families came to Lumara with a drug-related death. Today, that number has skyrocketed to one in every three or four referrals,” said Sturko. “This is the direct result of the BC NDP’s failed policies. Eby’s approach has failed not just individuals struggling with addiction but also their families, leaving communities across BC in mourning.”

The grief camp, which provides vital support and therapy for families dealing with the loss of loved ones, is struggling to keep up with demand as the drug crisis continues to escalate. Sturko emphasized the urgent need for a complete overhaul of the province’s approach to addiction and public safety.

“The BC NDP has allowed this crisis to spiral out of control, and its devastating families,” Sturko continued. “We need real solutions that prioritize prevention, treatment, and family support—not just harm reduction. The BC Conservatives will fight to address the root causes of addiction, restore public safety, and ensure that families have the resources they need to heal.”

Sturko pledged that a BC Conservative government would focus on comprehensive drug policy reform, including greater access to addiction treatment, enhanced mental health services, and targeted support for families impacted by the crisis.

“David Eby’s failure to act is costing lives and tearing communities apart,” Sturko concluded. “British Columbians deserve leadership that will confront this crisis head-on and provide real solutions to support those in need.”
