“We need to prioritize community consultation and ensure the development process does not displace large numbers of renters, reduce public safety, or increase criminal activity and open drug use. Congregating people with mental health and addictions issues into an SRO-style drug den, and providing them publicly supplied addictive drugs with little or no support, is not the solution—it will lead to negative outcomes for both at-risk individuals and our neighbourhoods.”
August 12, Vancouver, BC: Dallas Brodie, Conservative Party of British Columbia candidate for Vancouver-Quilchena, and Paul Ratchford, Conservative Party of British Columbia candidate for Vancouver-Point Grey, are calling for a comprehensive review of a proposed development located directly adjacent to their constituencies.
Dallas Brodie, a staunch advocate for community engagement and safety, stresses the importance of involving local residents in the decision-making process for new housing projects. With a solid background in public service and business, Dallas is committed to ensuring that development plans align with the community’s values and needs.
“Our community deserves a voice in the future of our neighbourhoods,” said Dallas Brodie. ”We must ensure that any new housing development not only meets the needs of our residents but also fosters a safe and healthy community for decades to come. Most importantly, we must reject any initiatives that include so called ‘safe’ injection sites, which would only serve to damage our community.”
Paul Ratchford, known for his belief in local democracy, echoes the need for careful review and active community participation in housing development decisions. With extensive experience in business and as a father or three children, Paul is focused on creating a development plan that works for decades to come and enhances the quality of life for all residents.
“Vancouver-Point Grey residents must have a voice in the developments that impact their lives today and for years to come. Congregating people with mental health and addictions issues into 129 single units of low barrier SRO style housing, at 7th & Arbutus St, with a drug consumption site directly across the street from St. Augustine School and a toddler park, makes no sense for local residents, at-risk individuals, or anyone else,” stated Ratchford. As addiction expert Dr. Julian Somers has repeatedly noted in the media it’s the “wrong model” and “wouldn’t be successful in any location”. There are better options for this government funded site.
Both Dallas Brodie and Paul Ratchford are critical of the NDP government’s failed housing plans. “Eby’s housing policies have been a complete train wreck. Soaring rental prices, Bills 44 and 46—which will accelerate the displacement of tenants along the Broadway corridor in Kitsilano—and a drug consumption site at Arbutus and 7th appear to be their housing legacy,” said Ratchford.
“We must prioritize the well-being and safety of our communities,” said Brodie. “Paul and I are leading the charge to ensure that development in Vancouver-Quilchena and Vancouver-Point Grey reflects the values and needs of our residents. We will stand firmly against these harmful initiatives.”
