John Rustad calls Premier Eby’s new cabinet committee “a clueless response to a serious threat”

VANCOUVER, BC: Conservative leader John Rustad blasted Premier David Eby’s latest blunder: a new cabinet committee that completely misses the mark on addressing the real reasons behind the looming threat of U.S. tariffs. Instead of tackling the clear and repeated concerns of the new American administration, Eby has assembled a team that fails utterly to address the issues at hand.

Rustad also accused Eby of failing to follow the lead of other premiers who are challenging the American threat head on.

“The Premier of Alberta has been to Washington. The Premiers of Ontario and Manitoba have already taken measures to strengthen the border,” said Rustad. “Even the federal government has sent ministers to the U.S. Capitol.”

“The new U.S. administration has been crystal clear,” said Rustad. “Their tariff threats are a direct response to Canada’s failure to control illegal immigration and crack down on fentanyl entering the U.S. across our border. And what does Eby do? He puts together a task force that completely ignores border control and law enforcement. You can’t make this up!” said Rustad. “It’s as if he’s oblivious to reality.”

“Premier Eby needs to put his attorney general and his minister of public safety on the file, now,” said Rustad. “Otherwise, B.C. families and businesses are going to pay the price.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has been unequivocal, stating, “we are going to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from Canada until they address the massive flow of illegal immigrants and stop the deadly fentanyl that’s pouring into our country.”

Similarly, the U.S. administration’s new border czar Tom Homan has made it clear that Canada’s lax border security is a national security threat, warning, “the northern border has become a significant concern. We need Canada to step up and address the illegal crossings and drug trafficking that threaten our nation’s safety.”

“Despite these unambiguous warnings, Eby refuses to take action where it actually matters,” added Steve Kooner, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough and official opposition critic for the Attorney General’s ministry. “Where is Attorney General Niki Sharma? Where is Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Garry Begg? These are the people responsible for enforcing our laws and securing our province, and somehow they didn’t make the cut for Eby’s cabinet committee. This is beyond incompetence – it’s negligence.”

“British Columbians should be outraged. The livelihoods of workers, businesses, and entire communities are at stake, and Premier Eby is too busy playing political games to take real action,” said Rustad.

“If David Eby actually cared about protecting B.C.’s economy, he would be working to secure our border and crack down on fentanyl – not assembling a useless committee that won’t move the needle a millimetre.”

“Eby needs to rework this ineffective committee and include the ministers who have the authority to address the core issues driving this tariff threat. British Columbians deserve real leadership, not empty gestures.”
