FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“This initiative is about empowering local leaders, improving community outcomes, and ensuring that Surrey has the flexibility to thrive on its own terms.” - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia
September 10th, Surrey, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, has announced his full support for Surrey’s push to obtain Charter City Status, granting it similar powers as those enjoyed by Vancouver since 1953. Surrey City Council recently voted to move forward with this initiative, aiming to grant the city greater autonomy over housing, taxation, and local decision-making.
“Surrey is a dynamic and rapidly growing city that deserves the same tools and independence as Vancouver,” said Rustad. “Charter City Status will enable Surrey to better manage its growth, address local challenges, and seize opportunities that are specific to its communities.”
The proposed charter would give Surrey increased control over important issues, such as local housing regulations, transit development, and revenue generation, allowing the city to directly respond to the needs of its residents without relying on one-size-fits-all provincial policies.
“As the Leader of the Conservative Party of BC, I am committed to making Charter City Status for Surrey a reality when elected,” Rustad added. “This initiative is about empowering local leaders, improving community outcomes, and ensuring that Surrey has the flexibility to thrive on its own terms.”
Rustad highlighted the importance of local governance in driving effective solutions, emphasizing that granting Surrey a city charter would create a framework for smarter, more responsive governance that meets the needs of its diverse and growing population.
“Our commitment is clear: when elected, the Conservative Party will prioritize granting Surrey the charter status it deserves,” Rustad concluded. “We look forward to working with local leaders to make this a reality and helping Surrey achieve its full potential.”
