BRING BACK PLASTIC STRAWS
“British Columbians are tired of paying extra for policies that don’t work. It’s time to move past feel-good regulations that worsen the lives of everyone and get back to common sense. By bringing back plastic straws, cutlery, and removing the bag fee, we will restore freedom of choice and focus on real solutions for our environment.” - John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia
October 3rd, Vancouver, BC: John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, today announced his support for bringing back plastic straws and cutlery, and eliminating the bag fee that has burdened British Columbians under the NDP’s heavy-handed regulations. Rustad emphasized the need for practical solutions that balance environmental protection with consumer choice, rather than forcing ineffective policies on the public.
“The ban on plastic straws has been nothing but a nuisance for families and businesses across BC,” said Rustad. “It hasn’t achieved any significant environmental goals, but it has certainly made life worse for people. We will bring back plastic straws and cutlery, and eliminate the unnecessary bag fees that do little but add costs to everyday shopping.”
The Conservative Party of British Columbia is committed to reducing government overreach and restoring common-sense policies that respect individual choice while focusing on real solutions for the environment.
Key elements of John Rustad’s plan include:
- Bringing Back Plastic Straws and Cutlery: Rustad pledged to repeal the NDP’s ban on plastic straws and cutlery, allowing consumers and businesses to make choices that fit their needs.
- Eliminating the Bag Fee: The mandatory fee for bags has been a burden on consumers and businesses alike. Rustad vowed to eliminate this mandatory fee that goes into the pockets of grocers. Groceries are already expensive enough.
- Restore Bag Choice for Shoppers: The Conservative Party of BC will remove regulations that restrict what type of bags shoppers can use. Shoppers should choose the bag that works best for them. Government should focus on real problems, not policing shopping bags.
- Focusing on Effective Environmental Solutions: Rustad emphasized that while environmental protection is important, the government should focus on policies that actually make a difference without inconveniencing people’s daily lives for no reason.
“British Columbians are tired of paying extra for policies that don’t work,” Rustad added. “It’s time to move past feel-good regulations that worsen the lives of everyone and get back to common sense. By bringing back plastic straws, cutlery, and removing the bag fee, we will restore freedom of choice and focus on real solutions for our environment.”
