BC Conservatives Commit to Full Public Inquiry Into Use of Taxpayer Dollars for Illicit Drug Purchases

John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, and Elenore Sturko, MLA for Surrey South and Conservative Candidate for Surrey-Cloverdale, Announce Comprehensive Investigation

October 18th, Vancouver, BC: Today, the Conservative Party of British Columbia commits to launching a full public inquiry into the use of taxpayer money to purchase illicit drugs from organized crime organizations on the dark web. This inquiry will seek to uncover who knew what, when they knew it, and what actions were or weren’t taken by the New Democrats, including Premier David Eby.

John Rustad, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, stated: “There is a clear and urgent need for an independent investigation into the New Democrats’ involvement in the trafficking of illicit drugs by the Drug User Liberation Front (DULF). We need to know when David Eby and his government were made aware of this illegal activity, and why they continued to fund an organization openly involved in the purchase and distribution of dangerous street drugs. As Premier, Eby must answer for how hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars ended up in the hands of groups trafficking drugs to vulnerable communities.”

Elenore Sturko, MLA for Surrey South and Conservative Candidate for Surrey-Cloverdale, added: “We have repeatedly raised these concerns, yet we are left with more questions than answers. David Eby and his government knew for years that DULF was buying heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine on the dark web and selling these drugs in our communities. The BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) even supported this dangerous activity under the guise of research. It’s time to expose what has been hidden. A Conservative government will launch a public inquiry so that British Columbians can finally get the answers they deserve.”

Despite repeated warnings and clear evidence that DULF was involved in illegal drug trafficking, David Eby chose to fund them anyway, continuing his radical drug legalization agenda at the expense of public safety. This is a government that allowed illicit drugs to be purchased on the dark web, repackaged, and sold – a shocking use of public funds with life-threatening consequences.

Former Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall and organizations like the BCCSU have played a role in these activities, working alongside DULF in their so-called ‘compassion clubs,’ while the NDP government turned a blind eye. The connection between taxpayer funding and organized crime must be fully investigated.

Rustad concluded: “David Eby has built his career advocating for drug legalization and defending drug dealers. He’s now using public funds to push this dangerous agenda, experimenting on vulnerable, severely addicted people while hiding behind organizations like DULF and the BCCSU. This must stop. The public deserves accountability, and our government will deliver it.”

The BC Conservatives are committed to a safer, more responsible British Columbia. The public inquiry into these actions will be a crucial first step in restoring transparency and trust.
